Planning of alterations to complex facilities such as power plants and nuclear power stations can be supported by taking actual 3-D documentation of the current status. Areas with many pipes can be documented 3 dimensionally and through the import of VRML data into the scan collision hazards of adding new pipes or modifying existing structures can be excluded. This means that remote users can plan the installation of new systems or structures without having to visit the facility. This saves time and money as often safety courses have to be attended and there are security restrictions. Due to the nature of planning in 3-D space can be optimised meaning a more efficient use of the available volume. Time can be saved through speed of scans, the large field of view of the scanner and speed of scans means the scanner needs less time. This can be critical when areas are shut down for brief periods. This combined with the lack of ventilation in the scanner unit means an overall lower level of contamination.
